Pure tone audiometry is the key hearing test used to identify hearing threshold levels, enabling determination of the degree, type and configuration of a hearing loss. This provides a basis for diagnosis and management of hearing loss. Speech audiometry is a fundamental tool in hearing loss assessment. Speech audiometry determines speech intelligibility and discrimination and provides information on word recognition. Speech in noise testing will give the audiologist information of the patient’s ability to hear words in the presence of background noise. During these tests the patient will wear headphones and hear sounds and words in the ear. It is non-invasive and only takes a few minutes. These tests will indicate to the audiologist whether the patient has a hearing loss and if so, depending on the degree and location of the hearing loss, is the patient a candidate for hearing aids. Speech and speech in noise testing is an important factor when a determining if a patient is a hearing aid candidate.
