BPPV — benign paroxysmal positional vertigo — is the most common cause of sudden vertigo. It presents as brief but intense spinning when you roll over in bed, lie down or look up.
It's caused by tiny calcium crystals dislodging in the inner ear and floating into the wrong canal, where they trigger the balance system when your head moves. It sounds alarming; it's actually very treatable.
Treatment is one or two sessions of a simple repositioning manoeuvre (Epley) — no medication, no surgery. Most patients walk out symptom-free, or dramatically improved after a single visit.
If a spinning room has been part of your week, book an appointment and we'll test for BPPV and treat it in the same visit where possible.
